A bumper crew of thirteen Balsam bashers climbed to the area near Pleck Meadow (not the Himalayas!), defying the mixed weather forecast in the quest to deliver a blow to an area of this non-natives species!
The ‘Friends of’ community bashed picked and took the nettle sting blows with the aim of preventing the spread of this species to Pleck Meadow. During this session, a beautiful blue insect was found along with bees and moths as the team were actually blessed with pleasant weather. Discussions aplenty about a shared love of our local environment – all positive vibes!
A few of us then assembled into a post Balsam beating quiz team – of course named ‘The Friends of The Coppice and Arden Hall’ (got to spread the name!) using our vast knowledge sets to score a credible 4th place!
So, lessons learnt include –
* you can actually eat Balsam
* there is a plant commonly known as Sticky Willy!
* it’s 10503 miles from London to Sydney
* a lot of people have affection to help improve the environment of Arden Hall and The Coppice
Thank you very much to all volunteers.
The Friends will be back at the Coppice on Wednesday 2nd July at 6:30pm for a mini-wildflower ID walk at the accessibility ramp up to the Peel Park & the Coppice LNR car park. Free and open to all, it will be a short & sweet walk around a highly diverse wildflower area! Project Officer Robert will be doing a bit of weeding after the ID walk.
